Source-to-Pay vs Procure-to-Pay: What's the Difference?

S2P vs P2P: Understanding the Scope

While often used interchangeably, Source-to-Pay (S2P) and Procure-to-Pay (P2P) represent different scopes of the procurement process.

Procure-to-Pay (P2P)

P2P covers the operational purchasing cycle:

  • Purchase Requisition → Approval → PO → Goods Receipt → Invoice → Payment

P2P focuses on executing purchases efficiently once a supplier is already selected.

Source-to-Pay (S2P)

S2P includes everything in P2P plus strategic sourcing:

  • Need Identification → Sourcing (RFx) → Supplier Selection → Contract → P2P Execution

S2P adds supplier discovery, competitive bidding, contract negotiation, and supplier management.
