S2P vs P2P: Understanding the Scope
While often used interchangeably, Source-to-Pay (S2P) and Procure-to-Pay (P2P) represent different scopes of the procurement process.
Procure-to-Pay (P2P)
P2P covers the operational purchasing cycle:
- Purchase Requisition → Approval → PO → Goods Receipt → Invoice → Payment
P2P focuses on executing purchases efficiently once a supplier is already selected.
Source-to-Pay (S2P)
S2P includes everything in P2P plus strategic sourcing:
- Need Identification → Sourcing (RFx) → Supplier Selection → Contract → P2P Execution
S2P adds supplier discovery, competitive bidding, contract negotiation, and supplier management.
Which Do You Need?
| Criteria | P2P | S2P |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Operational | Strategic + Operational |
| Sourcing | No | Yes (RFx, auctions) |
| Contract Mgmt | Basic | Full CLM |
| Best for | Stable supplier base | Dynamic sourcing needs |
